Free Tax Filing in California

California filers have two returns to get right: the federal return filed with the IRS and the state return filed with the California Franchise Tax Board. Both can often be filed at no cost.

This page explains the no-cost filing paths available to California residents, where free in-person help is found, how the state return fits in, and the point at which a return outgrows those programs. PRISM does not run them and does not file returns for free.

Free filing options for California residents

    IRS Free File (federal)

Guided federal preparation through IRS partner software, available to taxpayers under an income limit the IRS publishes each filing season. Free fillable forms are available to everyone regardless of income.

    CA state return

California residents file a federal return with the IRS and a separate state return with the Franchise Tax Board. The FTB operates CalFile, its own no-cost direct filing surface, and also lists free filing partners for taxpayers who qualify.

Free tax filing assistance near you in California

IRS-certified VITA and TCE sites operate across every major California metro, including Los Angeles, San Diego, the Bay Area, Sacramento, and the Central Valley, typically from late January through the April deadline.

The IRS site locator is the reliable way to find a current location, because volunteer sites change addresses and hours every season. Availability is heaviest between late January and mid-April, and popular sites take appointments early.

    • VITA and TCE site locator — free preparation for lower- and moderate-income filers, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers.
    • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide — focused on taxpayers 60 and older; no AARP membership required.
    • MilTax — for active-duty service members and many recently separated veterans.

When a California return outgrows free filing

Volunteer sites decline returns beyond their certification level, and Free File partners limit eligibility by income and sometimes by form. Returns involving equity compensation, self-employment, rental property, a large capital sale, income sourced to more than one state, or an open IRS notice regularly fall outside those limits.

The signal is the return, not the state. If your facts are inside the limits, the free path is the efficient one. If they are outside, what matters is seeing the consequence of the position before the return is filed.

Free tax filing in California: common questions

How can I file my taxes for free in California?

Most California filers have three no-cost paths: IRS Free File, which offers guided federal filing through partner software to taxpayers under an income limit the IRS sets each season; free in-person preparation at an IRS-certified VITA or TCE site; and filing the state return directly with the California Franchise Tax Board through CalFile.

Where can I find free tax filing assistance near me in California?

The IRS runs a free preparation site locator that returns VITA and TCE locations by ZIP code. VITA generally serves lower- and moderate-income filers, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers; TCE and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide focus on taxpayers 60 and older. Active-duty service members and many veterans can use MilTax instead. IRS-certified VITA and TCE sites operate across every major California metro, including Los Angeles, San Diego, the Bay Area, Sacramento, and the Central Valley, typically from late January through the April deadline.

Do I have to file a separate California state tax return?

Yes. California residents file a federal return with the IRS and a separate state return with the Franchise Tax Board. The FTB operates CalFile, its own no-cost direct filing surface, and also lists free filing partners for taxpayers who qualify.

Is free filing still available if my return is complicated?

Free programs have scope limits. VITA sites turn away returns beyond their certification level, and Free File partners restrict eligibility by income and sometimes by form. Returns involving equity compensation, a business, rental property, large capital transactions, multi-state income, or a prior-year IRS notice frequently fall outside those limits. Filing free is still possible in some of those cases, but the constraint is the complexity of the return, not the state you live in.

What documents do I need to bring to a free tax site in California?

IRS-certified sites generally ask for photo identification, Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return, all income statements (W-2, 1099, SSA-1099, brokerage forms), records of deductible expenses, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, and last year's return. Both spouses must be present to file a joint return electronically.
