PRISM FAQ

Before you hand someone your taxes, a few fair questions.

    We’d ask them too.

PRISM works with straightforward individual returns and more complicated tax situations.

Sometimes the right answer is deeper analysis.

Sometimes it’s simply getting the return filed.

The point is knowing the difference.

    What PRISM is

    Does PRISM prepare tax returns?

    Yes.

PRISM provides professional individual tax preparation, tax planning, projections, and IRS and state notice assistance.

PRISM also develops tax intelligence tools used for education and decision support.

Public tools and educational content are not substitutes for individualized professional advice or tax-return preparation.

Is PRISM a software platform or a tax practice?

    A tax practice.

PRISM is a professional tax practice that also builds and uses tax intelligence technology. The technology exists to make professional work more useful—not to hand clients a product and step away.

Scenario modeling, structured workflows, and Decision Records support the analysis. A professional still does the work and signs off on it.

Technology supports professional judgment. It does not replace it.

What's the difference between PRISM's public tools and working with PRISM?

The public calculators, Library interactives, and educational articles are exactly that: educational. They illustrate how tax concepts work using the assumptions you enter. They are not individualized tax advice, and using one does not create a professional engagement.

A professional engagement is different. Your actual documents, facts, filing circumstances, and objectives become part of the analysis, and the work is performed and reviewed for you.

Disclaimers written for the public tools describe those tools—not the scope of a PRISM engagement.

Do I need to prepare or file my own return to work with PRISM?

    No.

Clients engage PRISM to prepare the return. The tools are there to make the reasoning visible, not to move the work onto you.

You can use the public tools on your own if you want to. Most clients simply want the return prepared correctly and the decisions explained.

    Intelligence isn’t making everything complicated.

It’s knowing what deserves a closer look.

For some clients, that’s a straightforward return prepared correctly and efficiently.

For others, it’s understanding the tax consequences before making the next move.

    PRISM does both.

    GROUP ONE

    Working with PRISM

Is PRISM only for complicated tax situations?

    No.

And this is probably the most important misconception to clear up.

You don't need stock options, three states, a rental property, and a spreadsheet nobody wants to open to work with PRISM.

    Sometimes you have a W-2.

Sometimes you just want the return filed correctly, the process explained clearly, and tax season removed from your list.

    For qualifying straightforward returns:

    1 W-2 · 1 State · From $175

No planning package required. No paying for sophistication you don't need.

Simple when it should be. Sophisticated when it needs to be.

That's not a compromise in the PRISM model. It's the point of it.

Why would I choose PRISM for a simple return?

Because simple taxes don't require a simple-minded approach.

If your return is straightforward, we keep the engagement straightforward.

You get professional preparation, clear communication, and a process designed to get the return handled without manufacturing complexity around it.

And if something turns out not to be so simple?

You haven't hired a firm that reaches the edge of its capabilities the moment your financial life gets interesting.

A simple return shouldn't cost like a complicated one.

It also shouldn’t require finding a new tax professional when life changes.

What does a straightforward return cost?

    Let's make this one easy.

    1 W-2 · 1 State · From $175

That's the starting price for qualifying straightforward individual returns.

Additional income sources, schedules, states, investments, self-employment, rental activity, or other complexity can increase the fee.

We don’t call every return "complex." Complexity should earn its price.

Can PRISM work with me remotely?

    Yes.

Documents and communication can be handled through a secure digital process.

Which means you can work with PRISM without turning tax preparation into an afternoon errand.

Brooklyn is home. The client portal has a considerably larger service area.

Is PRISM actually based in Brooklyn?

    Yes.

PRISM Tax Intelligence is Brooklyn-based and serves local clients as well as clients working with us remotely.

We like being a neighborhood tax practice. We also like spreadsheets.

    People contain multitudes.

    Is same-day tax preparation available?

    For qualifying returns, yes.

When the return is straightforward, the necessary documents are available, and the situation is appropriate for expedited preparation, same-day preparation may be available.

More complicated work gets the time it deserves.

Fast when it can be. Careful when it needs to be.

What happens when I contact PRISM?

You tell us what's going on.

We determine what the situation actually calls for.

If it's straightforward, we keep it straightforward.

If something deserves a closer look, we'll explain what it is and why.

Then you decide how you'd like to proceed.

No mystery. No ceremonial reading of the tax code.

Just the right amount of intelligence for the decision in front of you.

    GROUP TWO

    What "Tax Intelligence" means

So what does "Tax Intelligence" actually mean?

Not making your taxes sound more complicated than they are. Quite the opposite.

Tax intelligence is knowing what deserves attention.

Sometimes that's a capital gain before an investment is sold.

Sometimes it's equity compensation before a decision is made.

Sometimes it's understanding how income across states changes the picture.

And sometimes it's looking at a W-2 and saying: this one's straightforward. Let's get it filed.

    Intelligence isn't complexity. It's judgment.

What makes PRISM different from another tax preparer?

For a straightforward return, the difference may not need to be dramatic. That’s an important answer.

You need the return prepared correctly. You need clear communication. You need to know what you're paying for. And you need someone to tell you if something actually deserves more attention.

Where PRISM becomes more valuable is when your tax life stops fitting neatly inside the return.

Investments. Self-employment. Capital gains. Equity compensation. Multiple states. Estimated taxes. Planning decisions.

PRISM can prepare what already happened. We can also help you understand what happens next.

The return is a form. Your financial life isn't.

Will PRISM try to sell me tax planning?

Not because you walked through the door.

If all you need is tax preparation, that's what we'll do.

Planning becomes relevant when there's an actual decision worth planning around.

Sell the investment or wait? Exercise equity now or later? Move? Change your estimated payments? Income changing materially?

Those are decisions. A W-2 sitting on your desk is paperwork.

    We know the difference.

When does tax planning actually become useful?

Usually before the interesting thing happens.

    Tax preparation answers: what happened?

Tax planning asks: what happens if I do this?

    That's a very different question.

Once an investment has been sold, equity exercised, income earned, or a move completed, some choices have already been made.

When the stakes justify it, PRISM can model the tax consequences while there's still a decision to make.

The best time to understand a tax consequence is while you can still do something about it.

    GROUP THREE

    What PRISM handles

What kinds of tax situations does PRISM handle?

PRISM works with straightforward individual preparation as well as situations involving areas such as: W-2 income, self-employment, investments, capital gains, equity compensation, rental activity, estimated taxes, multiple states, prior-year filing, projections, and tax planning.

The important part isn't making that list as long as possible. It's determining what your situation actually requires.

The right amount of attention. Not the maximum amount we can bill for.

Will you actually explain my taxes to me?

    Yes.

One client described the experience this way:

PRISM made a complex tax situation feel understandable.
    — Christopher S., Yelp

    Another said:

The process is easy to follow, communication is quick, and I always know where things stand.
    — Cheryl M., Thumbtack

    That's the standard.

You don't need a tax vocabulary to ask a tax question.

We'll explain what matters, why it matters, and what you should know next.

Confusion isn't expertise. And it certainly isn't a service.

Ready to get this off your list?
